Where to Build a Sunroom in Your Home?

A sunroom addition can give you a bright place to drink your morning coffee, entertain friends, enjoy the outdoors without dealing with the weather, or simply create more room for your family to spread out. But before you start choosing windows, flooring, or furniture, there is a bigger decision to make: where should it go?

The best place to build a sunroom depends on your home’s existing layout, the direction it faces, and what is already happening outside that part of your house.

Choosing the right location can make designing a sunroom look like a natural extension of your home rather than a room that was added later.

Read on to learn more about how to decide where to add a sunroom to your home and who can build it!

How to Design a Sunroom Around Your Home

Build a sunroom on your home

When you design a sunroom, start with your existing home instead of the new room itself.

For many homes, the rear of the house is the first place to investigate because backyards usually provide the greatest amount of buildable space. But when building a sunroom, it can also extend from the side of a house, fill an unused corner, replace or incorporate an existing deck or patio, or occupy another section of the property that provides a better connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

As a whole home remodeler, we will typically consider several factors before recommending a location.

  • How the sunroom connects to your home: We look at which interior room provides the most natural access and whether doors, windows, cabinetry, fireplaces, or other features could affect the connection.
  • The shape and size of your yard: A deeper backyard may make building a sunroom in the rear the easiest fit, while wider lots or L-shaped homes can open up possibilities along the side or corner of the house.
  • Privacy from neighboring properties: Nearby windows, patios, driveways, and outdoor living areas can influence where adding a sunroom will feel most private and comfortable.
  • Existing decks and patios: These spaces may already offer a convenient connection to the house, but we also consider whether they can support the addition or need to be rebuilt or reconfigured.
  • Utilities and permanent site features: Septic systems, wells, HVAC equipment, drainage areas, retaining walls, mature trees, and other features may limit where you can build a sunroom.
  • Setbacks and available building area: Property lines, easements, and local zoning requirements can reduce the portion of your yard that is available for an addition.
  • The existing roofline: Roof height, second-story windows, gutters, and nearby roof sections all affect how naturally a sunroom can tie into the house.

Our role is to help you understand which locations are practical for designing a sunroom, what tradeoffs come with each one, and what options are worth exploring further. From there, you can compare your best choices before deciding where to build your sunroom!

The Perfect Location to Add a Sunroom

Where to build a sunroom on your property

The direction your sunroom faces also can affect the amount of direct sunlight it receives, when that sunlight enters the room, and how warm the space may become during different seasons.

  • East-facing sunrooms receive stronger morning sunlight and tend to become more shaded later in the day. This can work well if you’re designing a sunroom for breakfast areas, reading spaces, or softer afternoon light.
  • South-facing sunrooms usually receive the greatest amount of direct sunlight over the course of the day. They can feel especially bright in winter, but the amount of glass, window treatments, ventilation, and HVAC planning become more important during warmer months.
  • West-facing sunrooms receive more direct sun later in the day. If you plan to use the room after work or in the evening, this may be appealing, although afternoon heat and glare should be considered.
  • North-facing sunrooms generally receive less direct sunlight and more even natural light throughout the day. This can create a comfortable setting for offices, sitting rooms, hobby spaces, or homeowners who want brightness without intense sun exposure.

This company is great. I had ten windows and a storm door replaced. I only found them by accident because I knew that I wanted Starmark windows and Choice Home is the local distributor. (BTW if you're replacing windows and want really good ones I would look at Starmark windows. They're not vinyl, but rather composite.) Everyone I met throughout the process was professional, knowledgeable and personable. I would recommend them for any home project you're doing.

Choice home remodeling built a sturdy, beautiful, four- season room for me. I am very happy with the results. The team kept me updated during every step of the project. The work crew was professional, polite, helpful, and easy to work with. They arrived on time and cleaned up every single day. I was very impressed that they provided me with a Daily schedule for the project so I would know who would be coming to do the work and at what time.
